Giving Tuesday

Meet Havana Chapman-Edwards (@thetinydiplomat) She advocates for human rights for girls around the world. She travels around the world with her diplomat family and sees girls just like her who are working hard to make an impact in their communities.

“When I move to a new country, I meet so many amazing girls with big dreams, but too many of them don’t have access to their basic human rights such as the ability to go to school.”

Havana is taking action by eliminating these barriers and obstacles so they have the chance to succeed.

Some of the biggest obstacles that girls around the world are facing are the lack of access to an education, lack of clean water, being displaced by climate change and war, domestic and gun violence, and so many more.

Havana’s current project is partnering with the Goldstein Refugee Center in Frankfurt, Germany where she currently lives. She has been doing a book club and English conversation class with the children for over a year. Due to the pandemic and social distancing restrictions, there are 10 children in need of laptop/notebook devices in order to keep up with their peers in school and attend virtual classes. For this global day of generosity, her goal for Giving Tuesday is to purchase these 10 laptops with internet access and Microsoft software.

“Accessibility is not charity or generosity. Accessibility is about inclusion and fairness.”

There is a large network of local organizations that have existed for a long time to support refugees that come to Germany.  Havana is honored to come alongside and build a friendship and connection with the people while her family is assigned to the United States Consulate in Germany.
